Valeria is an 86-year-old mother who works in a cotton factory washing clothes, where she has worked for 40 years. She currently lives in a small wooden home. Her three children, German (55), Donald (33), and Heysell (26) live with her. German’s two sons, German (33) and Melvin (32) as well as Heysell’s husband Manual (30), and their two children, Jenni (13) and Kelvin (10) also share their home.
Valeria was married twice. Her first husband passed away when their eldest son was only two years old. Her second husband had left her. For the most part, she has raised her children as a single mother. They have lived in their current home for about 30 years.
Valeria suffers from Diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and arthritis, but does not have consistent access to health care. Despite these challenges, she expresses her gratitude for their new home and states that they will feel much safer once it is built.
